I've been stringing songs together since I was 8 years old, burning CDs on my first laptop combining songs from my favorite soundtracks, Hannah Montana, Twilight, and Freaky Friday. By 6th grade, I was making CDs for my friends at school every month. Sometimes I would make 2 or 5 copies and give them to multiple people. By 2012, many of my friends didn't have dedicated CD players in their home. Most of them had game consoles, and I encouraged them to play the disc on their Playstation or Xbox.
People said iTunes killed the CD, but I think Spotify dominoed after Netflix speculating a culture of convenience that made people question why we buy disc media at all. My mix CDs gave way to playlists, but I never felt satisfied concluding a playlist. In practice, there is no definitive end to Spotify playlists because the algorithm attempts to elaborate on the sonic themes. The music never ends, even when you stop paying attention. A disc ends and offers a moment of silent clarity, which is the enemy of passive consumption.
I started thinking about new ways I could share music that had a similar sense of time and place that handing a CD to someone had. In the last two years I've maintained this website, and I'm always trying to think of new shapes to carve my little hold-out of the internet. Radio always fascinated me, being a DJ, hosting a show on the air. Pirate radio used to be broadcast from ships off the coast of cities, but the internet has made it so that you can share music from your house with whatever equipment you have.
I'm starting this show to revive my curiosity. In an age where algorithms are the tastemakers, and my Spotify playlists don't show up when you searth the platform, I'm hosting this hour-long show accenrted with my home recordings to give you something decidedly different.
